Staff Positions

Surflight Theatre is now accepting applications for the 2023 Summer Season.

Shows include Steel Pier, State Fair, Something Rotten, Annie Warbucks, Disaster The Musical, Grumpy Old Men, Popcorn Falls, Dracula A Comedy of Terrors and A Christmas Story, as well as providing support for Musicals For Children (Peter Pan, Cinderella, Mary Poppins Jr, Little Mermaid, The Wizard of Oz).

Staff applicants must have advanced educational or professional experience or be studying in a graduate program. (See “Internships” below for undergraduate or recently graduated applicants).

All positions are extremely “hands on” and require flexibility and humor in a rigorous summer stock environment. Staff positions include salary and housing. Theatre and housing are one block from the beach. Surflight operates in a team environment and looks forward to welcoming you into our team family. Note that Surflight operates as a resident stock theatre. Tech staff will have shop hours during the day working on the upcoming show and then may or may not have run crew duties for the show that is currently performing.

Dates of each position are listed below. Some flexibility in ending dates may be possible.

At present Surflight expects to be operating inside our theatre for the 2023 Season.

Open Positions:

  • Production Stage Manager - Responsible for overseeing all Mainstage shows as Stage Manager, scheduling rehearsals, calling shows, maintaining discipline, maintaining show, scheduling and guiding intern ASMs. May 15-Closing of Disaster, 9/2 or through end of season 10/15.

  • ATD/Carpenter – Strong carpenter, rigging skills a plus. With TD will oversee and participate in build, load ins and supervise/schedule intern shop staff. May 15-Closing of Disaster, 9/2 or through end of season 10/15.

  • Musicals for Children Production Stage Manager/Apprentice Director - Responsible for stage managing all Musicals for Children which occur weekly, Shrek, Jr youth production, and will oversee teen Apprentice Program (daily scheduling, teaching seminars, overseeing rehearsals, building Showcase with the Apprentices, scheduling teens for production positions in Musicals for Children). June 28-Sept 3. Could stay through end of Season 10/15 as Mainstage ASM.

  • Musicals for Children Technical Director/Scenic Artist – This position will be responsible for scenic painting of all Mainstage shows along with support from show staff. This position may oversee the Musicals for Children productions as Technical Director. Strong scenic painting skills necessary and moderate carpentry a plus. May 15-Closing of Disaster, 9/2 or through end of season 10/15.

  • Lighting Designer/Master Electrician – LD/ME will design all Mainstage shows and direct intern electrician. Seeking applicant with knowledge of ETC consoles and strong electrician. May run lighting console during shows. May 15-Closing of Disaster, 9/2 or through end of season 10/15.

  • Properties Master – Acquire, build or craft properties for all Mainstage shows along with intern assistant. Will oversee intern properties assistant and provide support for Musicals for Children as needed. May 15-Closing of Disaster, 9/2 or through end of season 10/15.

  • Costume Designer/Show Manager – Designer will create design of show along with Director and supervise intern shop staff in pulling, thrifting, building and some possible rental for all Mainstage shows. Very hands on position and will over see the entire shop. May 15-Closing of Disaster, 9/2 or through end of season 10/15.

Box Office Assistants

Be part of the Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven, NJ

Part-time, flexible shifts. Summer (mid-May), Fall and Holiday. Must be 21 or over to work in the box office.

Our box office staff answer phones, take orders and answer questions; print ticket orders and are the “face & voice” of the theatre when patrons call or visit the theatre.

Excellent people skills and patience needed. Typing, spelling and general computer skills important. No experience necessary with ticketing software-we will train. Knowledge of the surrounding areas is helpful.

Internships

Surflight Theatre is currently accepting applications for Internships for the summer season.  All interns receive a $300/week stipend and an extra stipend of $25/production for Musicals for Children work, as well as free housing. All rooms are shared in a large group beach house.  Interns receive design/staff opportunities on the Surflight Musicals for Children productions.  Internships are extremely “hands-on” with tremendous responsibility and require flexibility and humor within a rigorous summer stock schedule!  Ability to work long hours a plus! Terrific opportunity to work one-on-one with Designers and Staff as well as getting numerous large musicals and Children’s shows on your resume.  All interns have the opportunity to crossover into other technical areas if they have interest in other disciplines. Internships run May 15-Sept 2 or later depending on availability, but are full time positions and only applicants who can commit to the bulk of the summer season will be considered (mid-May-Sept 2). Some dates can be flexible if necessary depending on college schedules.

Stage Management:

Stage Management interns act as assistants to the PSM, assisting with rehearsals, taking blocking, maintaining discipline and serving as deck ASMs during shows. Interns also serve as the Stage Manager in charge.  

Electrics: 

Electrics interns serve on the electrics crew for hang and focus, are on deck crew or spotlight for run of shows and may design one or more of the Musicals for Children (adults performing for children).  Electrics interns frequently assist with sound and projections.  

sOUND: 

Sound Interns

Properties:

Interns in properties assist the prop master in all prop areas: shopping, carpentry, soft goods, painting, set dressing, crafting. Prop interns frequently serve as run crew for Mainstage productions.  

Costuming:

Wardrobe interns work as stitchers in the costume shop, run wardrobe crew during shows and assist in design for Musicals for Children.  

Scenic Shop:

Shop interns assist the shop as carpenters, riggers and/or welding. All skills will be taught if necessary. Interns serve on rail crew or deck crew for shows. Shop interns are frequently the TD for Musicals for Children productions.  

Arts Management:

Arts Management interns assist in the theatre office with Education, Housing, Company and Production management duties, assisting the business manager and Artistic Director. These interns will also assist in the front of house, concessions and in technical production for strike and load in. Arts Management interns will serve on run crew for Mainstage or Musicals for Children as necessary.

EDUCATION: 

Education interns

Box Office (only offered to those with local housing):

Box Office interns assist in the box office with taking orders, filling ticket orders and gift certificate requests, being the face of the organization to the public who come in for information or to purchase tickets, and other duties. Box Office interns will assist with strike or load in as necessary. Box office interns are not offered housing. Box office interns will start in the box office on TBD.

 Applicants for internships should have basic knowledge in the area in which they are applying. Internships are learning opportunities and staff is expected to train interns in all assignments if necessary. Interns are generally undergraduates or recent BFA graduates.

Show Place Ice Cream Parlour
