2023 AUDITIONS

Surflight Theatre is pleased to announce Non AEA adult audition submission information for performers 18 and over for our 2023 Season in Beach Haven NJ. In person auditions will be held in Beach Haven on March 11. You will still need to submit materials below to be considered at this audition.

We also are seeking singer/servers for the famed Show Place singing Ice Cream Parlour in Beach Haven. Please see Show Place audition information.

Surflight is committed to being a fully Covid vaccinated company and everyone will need to provide proof of their vaccination, prior to hiring.

Surflight is a Resident Stock theatre (the same group of actors perform one show while rehearsing the next show). At present we are seeking submissions for a diverse Summer Resident Company of strong Singer/ Dancer/Actors who will perform in ALL of the following summer shows as well as in some of our Musicals for Children in NJ only (mostly adults performing for Children). POPCORN FALLS, DRACULA and CHRISTMAS STORY will hold auditions at a later date. We will be considering all races/ethnicities for all roles in the following shows:

NOTE: in a resident company all actors will be offered leading roles and ensemble roles over the course of the contract.

We do not job in and are not considering performers for 1 summer show only at this time. (The exception is Grumpy Old Men. You may submit for this show only)

We do provide housing, salary or stipend (stipends are for performing internships)
The summer commitment in NJ will be starting on or around May 15th – August 20th (or September 3rd if you are available and appropriate for consideration for casting in DISASTER)

If you are auditioning for the Surflight produced Summer seasons, and the Show Place Ice Cream Parlour performing servers, we will watch your auditions, but please also see the specific audition requests for the ShowPlace at www.surflight.org.

At this time, Surflight Theatre is a non AEA theatre and not able to offer EMC points or hire AEA actors. If that status changes we will update here on the website.

We will be accessing the Strawhats database and if you are also registered there please let us know.

Surflight has a strong and longstanding performing internship program. All interns will receive a $300 stipend as well as housing if not local to the theatre. Additional payment will be made for performing in Children’s Theatre productions. Interns do only 2 hours of strike or load in per production. Internships are available to current undergraduates or just recently graduated in 2023. Surflight also hires actors who are not in school and are provided with $500 weekly compensation and housing if needed.

To submit for consideration please provide the following:

Subject line with last name, height, dates of availability

Headshot and resume

You may include a cover email listing what you believe you are auditioning for, if there is a specific part you believe you are most right for.

Short video slating full name, height, where you reside or hometown, if you are in college or graduating what school you are attending, dates of availability.

Singing video of 2 contrasting pieces preferably 16 bar cuts. You may sing from the shows in the season if you wish.

Please pick material that demonstrates music similar to the shows we are producing. If you have reels already prepared, those can be submitted instead of the 16 bar cuts.

Dance video. Please note, this is a dance heavy season. We are seeking advanced dancers in ballet or lyrical or ballroom and tap. Please submit a dance video or reels demonstrating your dance technique and must include advanced tap. There are only a handful of roles that do not require strong dance technique, If you are a mover only please note that in your cover email.

SHOW PLACE ICE CREAM PARLOUR WAITRI 2023

Is Show Place your Dream summer job? Then we want you! We are looking for happy, sparkly people over 18 who are silly and love to have fun and who are available from mid-June 3-Labor Day or very late August. ShowPlace waitri sing, dance, interact with patrons as they serve theatrically themed sundaes. Server salary, tips and housing provided.

Please include the following in your Show Place Audition Submission:

  • Headshot and Resume

  • A fun photo that shows your personality

  • A brief statement as to why you are the perfect person for Show Place (can be recorded or typed)

  • Two contrasting songs: One Golden Age and One Modern Musical Theatre

2023 NON AEA YOUTH AUDITIONS 

ALL INITIAL AUDITIONS WILL BE ONLINE SUBMISSIONS.

NOTE: ALL CHILDREN AND TEEN PERFORMERS MUST HAVE THEIR OWN
HOUSING LOCAL TO SURFLIGHT AND HAVE TRANSPORTATION TO ATTEND
REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES.

SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE BY MARCH 15th, preferably earlier. Please include in the subject line:

Name, gender, height and age. (IE Sara Johnson, (F) 5’, 14)

Children and teens ages 6 to 18 will be considered for the following:

1) Some roles in Musicals for Children (ie Cinderella, Wizard of Oz etc). These Productions run weekly, Wednesday through Sunday and change every week.
2) AGES 12-18 - All roles in Youth production of MARY POPPINS JR.
3) ANNIE WARBUCKS Mainstage production (roles of Annie and Female Orphans ages 8 to 13)
4) STATE FAIR Mainstage production (role of Violet F to play 12) and ensemble children age 8-14)
5) A CHRISTMAS STORY MUSICAL (Holiday production)

If auditioning for Mini ShowPlace program or Teen Apprentice Program, please note that on Audition Form and fill out paperwork specific to those programs.

ANNIE WARBUCKS will rehearse Days and/or Evenings July 12-August 1
ANNIE WARBUCKS will perform every day August 1-August 20 except Mondays

STATE FAIR will rehearse June 2-20. Rehearsals can be scheduled around school.
STATE FAIR will perform June 21-July 9

Children cast must be available for ALL rehearsal dates and ALL performances.

MUSICALS FOR CHILDREN productions run from July 7-Labor Day for one week each and will rehearse for a few days before each opening date and all day on the Wednesday of opening date. If a show repeats later in the summer, preference will be given to actors who are available for BOTH runs.

MARY POPPINS Jr, Youth Production will rehearse July 6-20, Run July 21-25 and August 18-22. This production is open to young people 12 to 18. Young people must be available for both runs of this production and for rehearsals and performances as follows.

Required availability:

Rehearsals begin June 29, 1-6pm
Off:  July 4, July 10, possibly July 18 (tbd)
July 19 - 10am-6pm with 6pm opening performance
July19-23 - performance call is at 5:15pm; released after cleanup approx 7:20pm
Aug 15 - Read/sing thru brush up 4:30-6:00pm
Aug 16 - 10am-6pm with a 6pm performance
Aug 16-20 -  performance call is at 5:15pm; released after cleanup approx 7:20pm

MINI SHOWPLACE Program (tuition based) June 25-July 1

TEEN APPRENTICE PROGRAM – Full time no tuition program July 5-August 22

Please prepare for initial electronic submission (all may be filmed on cell phone or tablet; professional footage is not necessary):

ALL CHILDREN 6-12 auditioning for Musicals for Children productions, Mini ShowPlace, MARY POPPINS Jr. or ANNIE WARBUCKS

1) Short intro video telling us your name, age, if/why you love the beach.
2) Please sing 16 bars of any one (1) Musical Theatre stage or movie song or Nursery Rhyme appropriate to your age and vocal type. Children should be singing in a natural young voice and not forcing a hard or contemporary belt.

OR 16 bars any appropriate Musical Theatre Song. The chorus of SPOON FULL OF SUGAR OR LET’S GO FLY A KITE are very appropriate.

Please do not sing Britney Spears, Christina Aquilara, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Megan Trainer etc or from shows such as: Dear Evan Hanson, Next to Normal, Legally Blonde, Spring Awakening, Catch Me if You Can, Mean Girls, Rent, Rock of Ages or similar.

3) Please select one of the following poems, memorize it and film it:

ALL PERFORMERS ages 13 to 18 please submit the following:

1) Short intro video telling us your name, age, why you would like to be involved with Surflight this summer.and your favorite thing about the beach.
2) 16 bars of Traditional Musical Theatre movie or stage song. Please do not sing any contemporary pop such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Megan Trainer etc or from any shows such as: Dear Evan Hanson, Next to Normal, Legally Blonde, Spring Awakening, Catch Me if You Can, Mean Girls, Rent, Rock of Ages or similar.
3) Short monologue of your choice memorized.

For female performers ages 9 to 13 to play an 11 year old (53 inches or shorter) who are ALSO or ONLY auditioning for the role of ANNIE in the production of ANNIE WARBUCKS. Please submit the following:

1) Short intro video telling us your name, age, favorite things at the beach and why.
2) Please film the song I ALWAYS KNEW in the key of G (one sharp). All young performers auditioning should be able to sing the song in chest voice throughout, never moving into head voice.
The vocal range for the role is A to D.
3) Poem from above or age appropriate Monologue of your choice memorized.
